sacrament of the sick

By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them and indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the people of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church 1499)

The sacrament of the sick is appropriate for those with a serious illness or an ongoing serious illness, those preparing for major surgery, the elderly and for those approaching death.

In grave illness the priest should always be summoned. The messenger should try give a clear idea of what is wrong, and should ask to speak to the priest himself, or leave a message if the priest is not at home. The priest should be called even in cases of fatal accident or sudden death.

Please contact Father Tom if any of the above applies or if you have any questions regarding this sacrament.
